Peanut, also known as groundnut is a crop of global importance. It is classified as both a grain legume, and, because of its high oil content, an oil crop. Most commercially grown peanuts are used for the extraction of their oil which is used in cooking. The by product of oil extraction is a pressed cake which is used as an animal feed and also in the production of peanut flour. Raw kernels are also commonly roasted and eaten as a snack food. It is the major oilseed of India.
